Temporal fluctuations in the wind velocity can give rise to internal shocks which dissipate a significant fraction of the wind kinetic energy. Part of the energy dissipated is transferred to the electrons through Fermi acceleration. If the post shock fluid is strongly magnetized, the relativistic electrons cool initially through synchrotron emission, and later through Compton scattering. The upsacttered radiation triggers a cascade of ee-pairs. We compute the final spectrum for a wide range of parameter values for the emission region. We show that the spectral diversity observed by BATSE can be naturally explained by emission from internal shocks, which are associated with the observed source variability.

Fireballs with a Neutron Component

Standard GRB fireballs must carry free neutrons. This crucially changes the mechanism of fireball deceleration by an external medium. As the ion fireball decelerates, the coasting neutrons form a leading front. They gradually decay, leaving behind a relativistic trail of decay products mixed with the ambient medium. The ion fireball sweeps up the trail and drives a shock wave in it. Thus, obser...

The influence of free neutrons on dynamics and radiation of astrophysical plasmas

We present arguments in favor of the presence of free neutrons in plasmas generated by compact astrophysical objects and find conditions necessary for the formation of the neutron component. The broad range of phenomena caused by neutrons includes both dynamical (sources’ variability, transition of fireballs to the two-flow regime) and kinetic (fission of helium nuclei by neutrons, electromagne...

Physical parameters and emission mechanism in gamma-ray bursts

Detailed information on the physical parameters in the sources of cosmological Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) is obtained from few plausible assumptions consistent with observations. We consider monoenergetic injection of electrons and let them cool self-consistently, taking into account Klein-Nishina cut-off in electronphoton scattering. The general requirements posed by the assumptions on the emissi...

Nuclear composition of gamma-ray burst fireballs

We study three processes that shape the nuclear composition of the fireballs in gamma-ray bursts (GRBs): (1) neutronization in the central engine, (2) nucleosynthesis in the fireball as it expands and cools, and (3) spallation of nuclei in subsequent internal shocks. The fireballs are shown to have a neutron excess and a marginally successful nucleosynthesis. They are composed of free nucleons,...

Dirty Fireballs and Orphan Afterglows: A Tale of Two Transients

Orphan afterglows are transient events that are produced by cosmological fireballs and resemble gamma ray burst (GRB) afterglows, yet are not accompanied by gamma rays. Such transients may be produced by jetlike GRBs observed off-axis, and therefore hold great promise as a test of gamma ray burst collimation. However, orphans may also be produced by “dirty fireballs,” i.e., cosmological firebal...
